Many talk about no managers and leaderless organizations these days (Corporate Rebels, Steve Denning, ...) A recent post from Steve below praising - for good reasons - the network based organization. I call it the #LiquidOrganization #LeadWithStrategy (not purpose) and with the liquidity to flow with opportunity (not comply to plans and budgets) No leaders is a false picture to paint as the liquid organization disintegrate without strong accountability! Therefor strong accountability is an essential ingredient often omitted in the stories you hear told. It's importance in implied from the work of Dave Snowden and most notably the European Field Guide for Crisis Management (#EUFG). Resilience comes from the ability to sense - the network - tension early and act - the accountability - decisively. Semantically this is a form of organizational negation - call it the ability to pivot - that democratic organizations just don't do well. So, yes, organizations with liquidity crush, because they have the power and insights to act. Not because they are democratic, but because they are open and sense tensions faster ... essential when avoidance of failure is more important than drive for value (options theory)

Here's how the Existential Universe Mapper framework has helped me be a better psychologist, a better coach, and in general a better human than I was. This tool doesn't see people from a clinical lens. By this, I don't mean how the tool is non-disgnostic. It is, but that's not the entirety of it. In a clinical setting, a person's ways of doing and being is removed from their context and analysed in an environment where external influences can be controlled, accounted for, or eliminated altogether when considering the person's behaviour, thoughts, emotions, beliefs about themselves, others and the world. This is never how we actually experience life and the different systems we inhabit at any given point of time. The EUM helps one to explore self as a system, and self as part of a system. This framework has immensely helped me to relate to people with more openness and curiosity - seeing them in their context, and observe my own internal knee jerk reactions to the person's ways of being and doing. Be it my judgement or my admiration, I can see which parts of me they are arising from. This framework has also helped me to listen to the voice of the systems better. Given my life experiences, I now know I have a propensity to listen to the victim's voice only. Even this awareness came out of my self work using this tool, and several other experiential learning spaces that helps one explore the self and system relatedness. The unique role this tool played in helping me to listen to the multiple voices of the system, and engage with the parts and the whole system is by providing me a context sensitive tool and a framework, almost a new language, to talk about systems and the different nuances of the systemic experiences. #DEI #HolisticWellbeing #GlobalListening #EUM #SystemsPsychodynamics #DeepListening #Psychology #MentalHealth

STRATEGY: FROM INTENDED TO REALIZED Henry Mintzberg has made history with the article that he co-authored in 1985 about the Deliberate and Emergent Strategy /*. The full and correct diagram of his theory is illustrated below. The fact that over the Strategic Horizon (until the next industry inflection point) our Strategy will change, is without doubt. We start with an Intended Strategy, to finally end-up with a Realized Strategy that is partially different. The most interesting part is what goes in-between. HOW, more precisely does our Strategy change? CHANGING OUR STRATEGY Although I fully agree that along the way we abandon some parts of our Strategy and replace them with others, the replacement mechanism described in the article is not entirely convergent with my experience. Why? 1. The article doesn't explain that the Strategy and the Strategic Plans (to implement it) are constructs based on assumptions and hypotheses about the future. There is no other way, since they are our projections about what might happen in the future. 2. The learning process illustrated in Figure 2 is not something that happens only after we have finished implementing the Strategy. It happens almost continuously. We identify every month or quarter certain hypotheses (employed in designing the Strategy or the Strategic Plan) that turn out to be invalid. THE ADAPTIVE TRADEOFF So, what is the mechanism of Strategy's change that is described in the article, and what tradeoff makes it really possible? "It is this adaptability that distinguishes the entrepreneurial strategy from the planned one [...] The entrepreneurial strategy provides flexibility, at the expense of the specificity and articulation of intentions [because] the articulation of a strategy locks it into place, impeding willingness to change it". In other words, if we want to articulate intent and be specific about our Strategy, that locks it in place and we won't be able (or willing) to change it. The explanation is rather of psychological nature, although it is not the only one. The solution? Start with a vague Strategy, as entrepreneurs do, and we'll be able to change it easily. The question is: Can we say that the "entrepreneurial strategy" is adaptive? Or it is just volatile, due to its superficial specificity and approximate articulation of its intentions? From a neuroscience perspective the FUTURE IS A PLACE. The brain uses place cells and grid cells to discover stable physical landmarks and establish reference points, and border cells (boundary cells) to understand the constraints of the environment. The brain also uses a process of dead reckoning, especially to determine how far it has traveled from "home." The capacity for navigation is one of the cognitive foundations for foresight. So, how do we practically apply this to develop better tools and frameworks for strategic foresight? We need to think in terms of navigation and map making. To align with how the brain works it might be useful to... 1. Establish landmarks or facts of the future. 2. Triangulate the landmarks/facts of the future to develop more stable relationships between the landmarks/facts. Later these triangulations can be used to stabilize or adjust what we "know" about the future 3. Establish the boundaries, or constraints, of the future. 4. Utilize the landmarks, landmark relationships and boundaries of the future to establish a map of the future. 5. The Quantum Question of Human Consciousness: A Mind in a Quantum Universe As we delve deeper into the enigmatic world of quantum mechanics, a fascinating question arises: how does this bizarre realm of probabilities and #superposition relate to our conscious experience? According to prevailing theories, the universe operates fundamentally governed by quantum principles. Yet, our subjective reality feels decidedly classical - a world of definite locations, clear distinctions, and cause-and-effect relationships. Is this a fundamental disconnect, or could consciousness be a quantum phenomenon? Neuroscience has struggled to explain the emergence of consciousness from the physical workings of the brain. The intricate dance of billions of neurons firing and #connecting undoubtedly plays a role, but how this translates to the subjective feeling of "being" remains a mystery. Quantum #physics offers a compelling alternative perspective with its inherent non-locality and potential for superposition. One possibility lies in the quantum nature of microtubules, protein structures found within neurons. Some theories suggest that these microtubules might act as quantum computers, their vibrations encoding information and influencing consciousness. The collapse of the wave function, a key concept in quantum mechanics where a probability becomes a definite state. Another avenue to explore is the role of quantum entanglement, where two particles become linked in a way that transcends space and time. Could this phenomenon explain the interconnectedness of conscious experience, where thoughts and emotions seem to flow effortlessly? Perhaps the very fabric of consciousness itself is entangled. However, significant hurdles remain. Demonstrating a clear link between quantum phenomena and consciousness is a daunting task. The brain operates at temperatures far above absolute zero, a condition typically required for stable quantum states. Furthermore, the complex interplay of neurons and #neurotransmitters suggests a system that might be too chaotic for purely quantum explanations. Despite the challenges, the potential implications of a #quantum connection to consciousness are profound. It could fundamentally alter our understanding of the mind-body problem, blurring the lines between physical and subjective reality.
